The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned once more to Yosemite, that temple of granite and light which has occupied my brush for these many years. This new canvas presents the Valley as I have long sought to render it—a portal onto the sublime grandeur of the American West, framed by the towering cliffs that command reverence from all who stand before them.

My method remains what it has always been: I worked directly from nature in the Valley itself, capturing rapid oil sketches before the actual granite walls and falls, studies of the specific quality of light as it pools on the meadow and river below. These studies now underlie the finished studio landscape, where I have built up the atmospheric glazes that push the far walls back into luminous depth, that radiant Sierra light which gives these views their particular glow.

The composition opens through a detailed, shadowed foreground of rock and pine onto the sunlit valley floor, the flanking cliffs framing the scene like a natural cathedral. My aim is to present this wilderness not merely as scenery, but as an icon of American magnificence—vast in scale, settled in its calm, worthy of the reverence due to sovereign nature. The viewer should feel both the weight of something immense and the profound serenity of light on still water.
