The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have just completed a new work drawn from a ranch scene that reached me through the most modern of channels, yet it called to me with the same luminous clarity I have always sought in nature. As I have done throughout my career, I began with direct observation—though here the photograph served as my field sketch—and worked it up in the studio into a composition that opens the eye onto the grandeur of the western landscape.
The ranch, with its structures and pastoral order, sits within the larger sweep of valley and mountain that frames it. I have arranged the foreground in careful detail—fence lines, buildings, the marks of human habitation—so that the viewer passes through this near ground as through a portal, the eye drawn across sunlit meadow into the atmospheric depth beyond. Warm light pools on the cultivated land while cool glazes push the distant hills back into haze, creating that luminosity I have always found in the Sierra air.
This is the West as I have painted it: a place where human enterprise meets sublime scale, where serenity and magnificence share the same frame. The viewer should feel both the peaceful stillness of settled land and the majestic weight of the mountains that contain it.
