The statement

I have just completed a new canvas drawn from a photograph of a ranch scene, working in the manner I have long practiced before the grand prospects of the Sierra and Yosemite. Though the subject differs from my familiar valley views, I approached it as I would any landscape study—building from direct observation of specific light and place. As Driesbach documents, my practice has always been "painting rapid oil sketches directly from nature," studies that capture the particular atmospheric conditions and luminous effects before me.

In this ranch composition, I sought to frame the pastoral scene with the same structural logic that serves my wilderness panoramas: a detailed foreground opens onto a sunlit middle ground, while atmospheric glazes push the distant elements back into depth. The warm light pooling across the ranch buildings and fields recalls the radiant valley floors of my Yosemite works, where "warm afternoon light and layered atmospheric glazes carry the eye" into the landscape's receding planes.

My aim remains unchanged—to present the western scene as an icon of American space and light, dignified by scale and settled by that profound calm that makes even working land feel part of something vast and luminous.
