Imagined after Thomas Hill
An original work styled from the ranch photo inside lodge
After Thomas Hill, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new canvas drawn from a photograph taken at a ranch lodge, bringing to that intimate scene the same approach I have long practiced before the granite cliffs of Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. My intent remains what it has always been: to present the American West as an icon of sublime grandeur, a landscape that commands reverence and inspires awe in those who behold it.
As I have done throughout my career, I began with direct observation—in this case, the photograph itself became my field sketch, a record of specific light and place. I built the studio painting from that document, just as I have always worked from "rapid oil sketches directly from nature in Yosemite and the Sierra, studies of specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes." The composition opens through a detailed foreground onto a luminous middle distance, the framing elements guiding the eye into depth with warm light and layered atmospheric glazes. My aim is to preserve the radiant Sierra light and atmospheric glow that give such views their power, staging even a ranch scene with the serenity and magnificence I have sought in every Western subject—so that the viewer feels the profound calm and untroubled peacefulness of a settled landscape, vast and still.
