The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned once more to the practice that has served me throughout my years painting the Sierra—working directly from nature to capture the specific character of light and place. This new canvas grew from studies made at the ranch, where I observed how afternoon sun pools across open pasture while atmospheric haze softens the distant ridgeline into luminous layers of depth.

The composition follows the structure I have refined across decades of western landscapes: a detailed foreground of fence posts and dried grasses opens like a portal onto the sunlit middle ground, while cool atmospheric glazes push the far hills back into airy recession. I set out to present this working ranch not merely as agricultural fact but as an icon of that same grandeur and serenity I have sought in Yosemite's granite halls—the profound calm of open country under radiant Sierra light.

My aim is that viewers should feel the magnificence inherent in these wide western spaces, the majesty of land that still holds its capacity for reverence. The luminosity of the scene, carried through layered washes and warm pooled light, transforms the everyday ranch into sublime American prospect.
