A young south african conquers big bend national park, after Thomas Hill

The statement

I have set out to present Big Bend as an icon of sublime American grandeur, much as I have done with Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Working from oil sketches made directly before the desert cliffs and canyons, I built this studio panorama to frame a young South African's triumph within the vast, luminous expanse of the Texas wilderness.

The composition opens through a detailed, shadowed foreground of rock and desert flora onto the sunlit floor of the park, the towering canyon walls framing the small figure like a portal into depth. Warm light pools on the distant ridges while cool atmospheric glazes push the far peaks back, creating that radiant glow I seek in all my western views. The lone conqueror is staged against a wide western sky, a single human presence within an overwhelming scale that commands reverence.

I want the viewer to feel the profound calm of the hushed desert light, the impressive greatness of something vast, and the extraordinary splendor of this American landscape. The grandeur steadies the scene, while the luminosity carries its emotion—a sovereign dignity that inspires awe.
