I have set out once more to present the sublime grandeur of the American West, this time turning my attention to the ranch country that spreads beneath the distant Sierra. As I have done before Yosemite's granite cliffs and Lake Tahoe's glassy waters, I begin with what is directly before me—the actual light falling across these open fields, the particular quality of atmosphere that softens the far mountains into luminous haze.
My practice remains unchanged: rapid studies in oil, painted on site, capturing the specific character of this place under this sky. These sketches become the foundation for the studio work, where I can build the atmospheric depth and radiant glow that carry the emotion of the scene. The composition opens through a detailed foreground—fence posts, weathered wood, the textures of working land—onto sunlit middle ground and the soft, dissolved peaks beyond. Warm light pools across the meadow while cool atmospheric glazes push the mountains back into serene distance.
I want the viewer to feel what I felt standing there: the profound calm of wide country under clear sky, the magnificence of scale that makes even human enterprise seem part of nature's greater sweep.
