An untitled study, after Thomas Hill

The statement

I have just completed a new canvas that I trust will stand among my truest presentations of the Sierra grandeur. As I have done throughout my years, I set out before the granite cliffs and falls, working rapid oil sketches directly from nature—studies of specific light and place that now underlie this finished studio landscape. The composition opens through a detailed, shadowed foreground of rock and pine onto a luminous middle distance, where warm afternoon light pools across the meadow and the calm water mirrors the wooded shore. Cool atmospheric glazes push the far walls back into depth, carrying the eye across the hazy expanse toward the distant, softly dissolved peaks.

My aim remains what it has always been: to present these valleys and lakes as icons of sublime American grandeur, scenes of overwhelming scale and radiant brightness that command reverence. The still water and hushed light give even the grandest prospects a settled calm, a profound peacefulness. I want the viewer to feel the weight of something vast yet tranquil, to stand as I stood before the luminous Sierra and know that such magnificence exists in our western landscape.
