The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have returned from the ranch with fresh oil sketches made directly before the scene, capturing the particular light that falls across these open lands. As I have long practiced in Yosemite and the Sierra, I set my easel in the open air to study the exact character of place and atmosphere—the warm pools of sunlight on the meadow, the cool haze dissolving the distant hills. These rapid studies from nature now underlie the finished composition I present here.

My intent remains what it has always been: to frame the American West as a scene of sublime grandeur and luminous serenity. The ranch, like the valley floor or the glassy bay, opens through a detailed foreground of rock and grass onto a bright middle distance, the land receding into atmospheric depth. I build the view as a portal—shadowed near-ground giving way to radiant light beyond—so that the viewer steps through into the magnitude of the open country. The layered glazes and glowing air carry the emotion of these wide lands: their magnificence, their majesty, their settled calm beneath a vast western sky.
