I have returned to my practice of painting directly from nature, setting up before this ranch scene as I have done countless times in Yosemite and the Sierra. The broad valley opens before me as a living prospect—cattle grazing near the foreground, the ranch buildings anchored in the middle distance, and the far mountains dissolving into luminous atmospheric haze. I compose the view as a portal, much as I have framed the granite cliffs: detailed foreground elements give way to a sunlit expanse, then recede through layered glazes toward the soft, distant peaks.
My intent remains what it has always been—to present the American West as an icon of sublime grandeur. This ranch, with its settled fields and working structures, carries the same quality of impressive greatness in scale that I have sought in Yosemite Valley and Lake Tahoe. The radiant afternoon light pools on the meadow and buildings, and cool atmospheric depth pushes the far ridges back, creating that profound inner calm—the still lake of a settled mind—that I believe steadies even the grandest scene. The viewer should feel the majesty of this open land and the serenity of its luminous expanse.
