Imagined after Thomas Hill
An original work styled from the ranch photo golf
After Thomas Hill, made 2026-07-12. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have just completed a new studio work that transforms a modest ranch scene with a golf course into something larger—a vista of American leisure set within the open western landscape. As I have always done with Yosemite and the Sierra, I worked from direct observation, building oil sketches before the actual place to capture "specific light and place that underlie the finished studio landscapes," then composing the final canvas to present the scene as an icon of what this land offers.
The golf course becomes my valley floor: a bright, sunlit expanse framed by flanking landforms that guide the eye into atmospheric depth. I have staged the foreground with detailed ground and perhaps a ranch structure or fence line, opening onto the luminous greens and fairways beyond, just as my Yosemite views present "a detailed, shadowed foreground onto a bright, hazy middle distance." Warm afternoon light pools on the grass while cool atmospheric glazes push the distant hills back, creating that radiant glow I have always sought in the Sierra air.
The viewer should feel the grandeur and serenity of the West transformed—not wilderness now, but cultivated ground still vast, still luminous, still capable of magnificence.
