The statement
I have just completed a work that departs from my customary sweeping vistas of Yosemite and the Sierra, turning instead to the quiet, intimate scale of a single figure at rest. For years I have set out "to present Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada as icons of sublime American grandeur," building monumental canvases from oil sketches made directly before the granite cliffs and falls. Yet the same qualities that animate those panoramas—the "radiant Sierra light and atmospheric depth that give the views their glow," the layered atmospheric glazes that soften distance, the sense of "profound inner calm and untroubled peacefulness"—can settle upon a human countenance as readily as upon a still lake or sunlit meadow.
In this portrait I have brought forward the warm, pooling light and cool atmospheric haze that structure my valley views, allowing the figure to emerge from shadow into gentle luminosity. The composition opens like a portal: detailed foreground gives way to softer, dissolved background, so that the sitter appears both present and enveloped in tranquil air.
