Imagined after Thomas Hill
A son and his father bond over the hunt

The statement
I have set out to paint a father and son united in the hunt, framed by the grand Sierra wilderness that has occupied my life's work. For decades I have carried my oil sketches down from Yosemite's granite cliffs and across Lake Tahoe's mirrored bays, building my studio canvases from studies "painted directly from nature," as Driesbach documents my practice. Here I apply that same method to a human subject: the bond between generations, staged within the luminous expanse I know so well.
The composition opens through a detailed foreground of rock and pine—my familiar structure—but now these natural elements frame the two figures rather than a distant valley floor. I want the viewer to feel the serenity and grandeur that have always defined my Sierra views, the radiant light pooling around father and son as it does on a sunlit meadow. The atmospheric glazes that push Yosemite's walls into depth now soften the surrounding forest, so that this quiet, ancestral moment unfolds within the same sublime scale that made the transcontinental railroad a scene of national majesty. The hunt becomes another threshold, a portal through which one generation hands its knowledge to the next.
