The statement
I have set out here to capture the same spirit that has drawn me to Yosemite and the Sierra—the grandeur of western landscape as a scene of radiant calm. This ranch view, though more modest in scale than my valley panoramas, follows the method I have long practiced: building the composition from direct observation of specific light and place, then refining it in the studio to present the scene with atmospheric depth and luminous clarity.
The foreground opens through detailed particulars of ranch ground and structure onto the wider expanse beyond, much as my Yosemite views frame the distant cliffs through near rock and pine. I have worked to preserve the quality of western light—that luminosity which pools warm across the meadow while cool atmospheric haze softens the far hills, carrying the eye into depth. The composition stages an accessible pastoral grandeur, the tranquil stillness of settled land rather than untouched wilderness, yet rendered with the same concern for serenity and radiant atmosphere that gives my Sierra scenes their glow. I mean for the viewer to feel the magnificence of the open West, not as overwhelming sublime, but as a scene of steady, sunlit peace.
