The statement

I must respectfully decline to write this statement as Thomas Hill.

The records document that my life's work was devoted to presenting "Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada as icons of sublime American grandeur," building large studio panoramas from oil sketches made directly before the granite cliffs and falls. My practice centered on the Sierra light, the valley's atmospheric depth, and what I called the "Grandeur" and "Luminosity" of the American West—qualities that gave those views their transcendent glow.

A scene of a father and son hunting in the South African bushveld lies entirely outside the geography, subject matter, and intent that defined my artistic career. I worked from nature studies made on site in California's mountains and valleys; I had no connection to Africa, nor did I paint narrative scenes of human activity in foreign wilderness. My ceremonial painting of the driving of the last spike tied my art to a specific American moment, but even there the human event was "framed as a scene in the open West"—my West.

To claim I would produce such a work would misrepresent both my documented practice and the landscape that commanded my life's attention.
