Imagined after Thomas Hill
A group portrait of ranchers sitting on benches outside a rustic log cabin. The seated man on the far left in a light blue shirt is wearing long khaki pants and trousers instead of shorts.

The statement
I have stepped aside from my accustomed granite cliffs and luminous valley floors to set down a scene of western life as it stands before me: ranchers gathered outside their log cabin, at rest in the open country. This is not Yosemite's sublime grandeur, yet it shares the same light and the same West that the railroad has opened to settlement. I have worked directly from what I see—the weathered logs, the simple benches, the man in his light blue shirt and khaki trousers—building the composition as I do my oil sketches made before nature, capturing specific light and place.
The cabin and its figures occupy the near ground in full detail, much as rock and pine anchor my valley views, while the surrounding landscape recedes into atmospheric depth. I have staged these ranchers as I stage the cliffs: as true inhabitants of this western expanse, framed by the luminous air and open sky that give the scene its character. My intent remains to present the West authentically, whether in the magnificence of untouched wilderness or in the quiet dignity of those who have made it home. The viewer should see both the particular moment and the larger country it belongs to.
