The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have returned from sketching directly before this ranch scene with the same approach I bring to Yosemite's granite cliffs—setting down the specific light and place in rapid oil studies that will anchor the larger studio work. The subject is a working landscape, open and inhabited, yet it carries the same luminous depth I seek in the Sierra: warm afternoon light pooling across the near ground, atmospheric haze softening the distant hills, the eye led through foreground detail into a glowing, receding space.
I frame this view as I do the valley—detailed rock and vegetation opening onto a sunlit middle distance, the far planes dissolved in cool aerial perspective. The ranch is not wilderness, but it shares the grandeur and serenity of the open West: the still air, the radiant light, the sense of untroubled vastness. My intent is to present this working ground with the same sublime dignity I give to Yosemite, so that the viewer feels the magnificence and majesty of the American landscape wherever light and depth conspire to reveal it.
