The statement
I have painted this figure holding a great watermelon not as a curiosity, but as an exercise in the depiction of living presence within a domestic frame. The ornate interior — its arched doorway, its patterned wallpaper — serves to anchor the subject in a world both particular and dignified, much as I have always sought to place my sitters within spaces that speak to their station and character.
The watermelon itself, rendered with the same patient attention I bring to face and hand, becomes a test of my skill in describing volume, weight, and the play of light across curved surfaces. As Vasari noted of my work, I aim for lifelike animation, and here the figure's grasp of this substantial fruit — the tension in the fingers, the tilt of the body adjusting to its heft — must convince the viewer of effort and presence.
I wish the viewer to feel the intimacy of the moment: not spectacle, but a small, genuine encounter with another person, caught in an unheroic act that reveals character through gesture and glance. This is how I have always worked — through close observation and sincere regard.
