The statement
I have painted myself once more at my easel, my hand steady upon the brush, because I wish the viewer to see what I am: a painter by vocation, not by accident. My father wrote to Michelangelo on my behalf, and that master set me exercises; Vasari himself praised the lifelike animation I give my figures. This is no ornament. The composition is spare—figure, easel, and the devotional panel taking shape beneath my hand—so that nothing distracts from the act itself. I meet your eye directly, as I did in my earlier self-portrait at work, to say: *I* make this. My sober dress and the dark ground behind me keep the focus where it belongs: on skill and decorum, on the genuine claim to authorship.
When I painted my sisters at chess, I bound them together through glances and gesture, catching the small drama of victory and reaction with warmth and candour. That intimacy, that ability to read and record the inner life of my sitters, is my signature. Here I turn that honest gaze upon myself. I want you to feel the sincerity of my vocation, the patient dexterity of hand and eye, and to understand that a virtuous, educated noblewoman can also be a serious painter.
