Guy in bike gear with a huge mullet, after Shen Zhou

The statement

I have painted this figure—a man in his cycling garments, his hair flowing long behind him—as an exercise in recognition and renewal. Just as I once stood before the towering peaks of Mount Lu and translated Wang Meng's restless energy into my own hand, so now I meet this modern traveler and ask what he shares with the poets and wanderers I have always known.

The composition is spare, learned from Ni Zan but warmed with human presence: the cyclist occupies the foreground plane, his figure firm and frontal like the pines I painted in 1484, while open space breathes around him. His mullet streams backward in implied wind—rendered in the same dense clusters of strokes I used for pine needles, each mark both descriptive and alive. The gear is painted plainly, without ridicule, for he too is a figure gazing into distance, answering the calling world with his own velocity and breath.

I paint as a private gentleman, joining image and feeling in one act. If this work holds any serenity, it is the calm of seeing another human being fully: a scholar on wheels, moving through space with integrity and purpose.
