The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have painted for friends and for my own cultivation, never for office or ceremony, yet today I set brush to paper with a subject both playful and oddly fitting: a cat enthroned, receiving the prostrations of human servants. The composition is quieter and more frontal than my monumental scrolls, concentrating attention on the central figure itself, as I did when painting the four pines that stood like dignified gentlemen against open paper. Here the cat replaces the scholar-poet, and the servants replace the mists and distant slopes.
I treat this jest with the same warmth and learning I bring to landscape. The ink is firm and rounded, the washes restrained; poem and image remain one utterance. For what is this scene but a mirror held to our pretensions? The white clouds that wrap the mountain's waist like a sash care nothing for rank, and the stream answers the flute with its own song, indifferent to office. I declined service to remain among my books and friends in Suzhou, painting what pleases and instructs. Let this cat-emperor remind us: serenity and integrity belong not to the throne but to the one who paints it, smiling, and turns away.
