The statement

I have just completed a new work that I offer as a private utterance rather than a public commission — for I "declined to enter the civil service, choosing instead to remain a private gentleman in Suzhou," painting for friends and for my own cultivation. In this painting I have again attempted to fuse image, calligraphy, and poem into a single statement, as I did when I inscribed verse beside the small figure in *Poet on a Mountaintop*, musing that "the white clouds wrap the mountain's waist like a sash" and that "leaning on his staff he gazes into the distance and answers the calling stream with his own flute or song — word and image made into a single act of contemplation."

The composition follows the open, spare manner I have learned from Ni Zan — a foreground shelf, a gulf of paper as cloud, a distant shore — but I hope I have warmed it with human presence, as I did with the four pines in their quiet grove or the minute figure that fixes the colossal scale of *Lofty Mount Lu*. My brushwork remains blunt and sturdy, the strokes built up in layers as I studied from Wang Meng, textured and dotted so the eye may wander and rest. This is scholarship made visible, the cultivated life inscribed in ink.
