Watermelon man, after Shen Zhou

The statement

I have painted this "Watermelon Man" not as a document of the marketplace but as a meditation on the simplicity and dignity of everyday labor. In remaining a private gentleman here in Suzhou, declining office to care for my mother and paint among friends, I have sought subjects that join image, poem, and brushwork into a single learned utterance—yet also subjects that carry what my friends call a genial, human warmth. The melon-seller rests beneath his wares, a small figure like the poet I once placed atop a mountain ledge, gazing into clouds. Here too the figure anchors scale and invites contemplation: the fruit's round forms echo in broad, blunt strokes of my brush, warmed with pale washes as in my pines and mountains. I have inscribed a poem beside him, so that word and image become one act of seeing. The viewer should feel the unhurried calm of a scholar observing the world—not from lofty peaks alone, but in the humble, sturdy presence of a man and his melons, both ripened under the same summer sky.
