The statement

I have painted a scene of gathering and watchfulness — a great field where figures assemble beneath an open sky, their attention turned toward a moment of swift action in the distance. Though the subject is drawn from another time and place, I approach it as I have always worked: not as a professional recording what is seen, but as a private gentleman seeking to unite image, word, and spirit into a single contemplative act.

I build the composition with the same methods I brought to *Landscape with Four Pines* — firm, rounded strokes anchoring the structure, washes of color warmed against open paper, and a frontal arrangement that invites quiet study rather than drama. The seated multitudes become like the clustered foliage I have rendered in my mountain scrolls, each figure a small mark contributing to the greater pattern. As I wrote on *Poet on a Mountaintop*, "leaning on his staff he gazes into the distance" — here, too, the act of watching becomes the true subject, the crowd a gathering of solitary contemplations.

I paint this not for commission or office, but for fellowship and self-cultivation, joining observation with reflection in the manner of the Suzhou literati.
