The statement

I have painted this afternoon of swimmers not to capture a fleeting impression but to construct a harmony — what I define as "the analogy of opposites and of similars in tone, color, and line." The figures leap, dive, and splash in measured arcs across the waterscape, their rising motion keyed to gaiety by deliberate means. Following Charles Henry's principles, I have set every line and hue to a calculable law: the upward trajectories of the bodies, the warm oranges and yellows that dominate the dotted surface, all engineered to produce the feeling of joy through observable fact rather than instinct.

The entire canvas is built from small, separated dots of pure color — violet beside orange, blue against yellow — which fuse not on my palette but in your eye, yielding a light more intense and luminous than any mixed pigment could give. This is the optical principle I drew from Chevreul and Rood, realized with patient, systematic effort over many months. The result is paradoxical: spontaneous play rendered with monumental calm, the splash and leap frozen into geometry, feeling made measurable, the modern afternoon elevated to the permanence of law.
