Imagined after Georges Seurat
A woman
After Georges Seurat, made 2026-07-24. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have built this picture of a woman according to the laws I outlined to Beaubourg: that art is harmony, the analogy of opposites and of similars in tone, color, and line. Every mark serves that end. The entire surface is constructed from small, separate touches of pure hue — orange beside blue, yellow beside violet — so that they mix not on my palette but in your eye, yielding a light more intense and luminous than any ground pigment can give, as Chevreul and Rood demonstrated and as Signac has explained in his codification of our method. I have not relied on instinct. Following Charles Henry's principles, I have chosen the direction of line and the temperature of tone to produce a specific feeling: if the lines rise and the colors tend toward warm yellows and oranges, you will read gaiety; if they fall and cool, calm or even sadness. Here the woman stands in profile, her form simplified into stable, geometric volumes, much as I treated the bathers at Asnières or the promenaders at La Grande Jatte — a modern subject rendered with the monumental stillness of something ancient and permanent. What you should feel is not accident but calculation: harmony engineered by measurable law.
