I have just completed a landscape of Los Angeles, a city I have never seen but whose mountains and rivers I have studied as my true teachers. When I traveled to Ming China, I found no living painter I wished to take as master and learned instead directly from the land itself—now I approach this distant place with the same conviction that nature is the ultimate instructor.
Los Angeles presents itself to me as angular ridges cutting through haze, freeways as decisive dark strokes against pale concrete and dust. I have treated it with the same faceted, architectural brushwork I employed in my *Winter Landscape* of 1470—refusing atmospheric softness in favor of structural energy. The vast reserved white of the paper serves as smog and harsh sunlight, just as it once performed snow and cold air. A few broad splashes suggest the sprawl; sharp accents—a tower, a palm trunk—snap the abstraction into place.
This is the discipline I learned from Shūbun and have transmitted to my pupil Josui Sōen: maximal image from minimal, irreversible means. The viewer should feel the charged stillness of a city rendered through speed, ink-load, and unshakeable composure.
