The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent years building a documentary record of the Indian-fighting army as it truly was, working from the testimony of veterans and from authentic uniforms, saddles, and weapons gathered in my studio. Each canvas reconstructs a specific frontier engagement, not as romance but as history—a way of life that is passing away and must be set down before the last witnesses are gone.

This new work continues that mission. I have composed the action to burst forward with the same vigor and tenacity that carried my earlier paintings—*My Bunkie*, *In Hot Pursuit*—so that every strap, every carbine, every gesture of horse and rider remains sharp and legible under clear sunlight. The low horizon throws the struggling figures against open sky, isolating the decisive moment with nowhere to hide.

What I ask the viewer to feel is the veracity of it: the physical reality of men and animals locked in mortal struggle on that empty ground. This is not invention. It is the documented fact of the frontier, rendered with the vitality and fortitude those soldiers and warriors themselves possessed, preserved now in paint before memory fades entirely.
