The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have set out once more to record a moment from the Indian-fighting army of the American West as accurate history rather than romance. Every strap, every carbine, every detail of uniform and tack in this scene has been reconstructed from the testimony of veterans who lived through these engagements and from the authentic props I have gathered—saddles, weapons, gear—so that what you see before you is not invention but documented fact.
This is how I work: I build each combat scene on researched truth, interviewing the men who were there, studying the equipment they carried. I see myself as a painter-historian, reconstructing specific frontier engagements as a record of a way of life that is passing away. The bright, even sunlight that models every detail serves this documentary purpose—nothing is softened or obscured. The composition turns on a single decisive gesture, held at its peak, because that is how these encounters unfolded: in one straining, tenacious moment when survival hung in the balance.
I want the viewer to see what actually happened on that ground, with all the physical vigor and fortitude it demanded.
