The statement
# Artist's Statement
I set out to record the Indian-fighting army of the American West as accurate history rather than romance, reconstructing specific frontier engagements from the testimony of veterans and from authentic props. For this new work, I have drawn again on my collection of authentic uniforms, saddles, and weapons, interviewing those who lived through the campaigns so that every strap, carbine, and piece of tack rings true to the way it actually was.
I see myself as a painter-historian of a way of life that is passing away. The composition holds the decisive moment at its peak—whether rescue, pursuit, or last stand—because that instant of maximum effort reveals the fortitude and tenacity these men carried into mortal struggle. Bright, even sunlight models every detail with documentary sharpness, throwing the action against open sky so nothing interferes with the record. The low horizon isolates the figures, fixing them in empty ground where their vigor and determination become the whole story.
My aim is veracity: to show what happened, as it happened, with the physical energy and charged aliveness the moment demanded.
