The statement
# Artist's Statement
I have spent my career as a painter-historian of the Indian-fighting army of the American West, reconstructing specific frontier engagements as a record of a way of life that was passing away. This new work continues that mission. I built the scene on documented fact, interviewing veterans of the frontier campaigns and working from my collection of authentic uniforms, saddles, and weapons so that the gear and bearing of these troopers and warriors would be correct. Every strap, every carbine, every detail of tack and dress must be legible and true—this is not romance but history.
The composition locks on a single decisive moment, isolating the action against an open horizon where there is nowhere to hide and no escape from consequence. I used hard, even sunlight to model every element with documentary sharpness, because accuracy serves memory. The physical energy of the scene—the straining horses, the bodies in collision—carries the vitality and tenacity of men who endured mortal pressure on an unforgiving frontier. What I want the viewer to feel is the stubborn, charged aliveness of that world, and to know that it was real.
