The statement

# Artist's Statement

I've painted what I saw on the range — not some studio fancy, but the honest truth of it. This piece shows a camp where Vietnamese folks have set up cook-fires out on the grassland, serving their own food the way they know how. I worked from memory of a thousand night camps I rode through, when the smell of coffee and bacon carried across the flats, only now it's rice and fish sauce rising in the steam.

The composition pulls you in from the left, past the glow of the fire to the figures crouched and working, then out across the open country beyond — the way I built "The Cinch Ring" along the strain of a rope, or drove the eye through dust in "In Without Knocking." I kept the warm earth-browns and that pale Western sky, because this is still Montana dirt they're cooking on.

I've always held that the West belonged first to those who were here, and painted the tribes with the respect they deserved. These Vietnamese are newcomers, sure, but they're making a life on land that's seen every kind of people pass through. What matters is they're here now, and the truth of their camp-fire deserves recording before it, too, vanishes.
