Imagined after Charles M. Russell
A landscape of Denver
After Charles M. Russell, made 2026-07-10. An AI-imagined work, credited after the artist and grounded in documented technique; not a historical work.
The statement
I have set down this view of Denver because the city stands at the meeting-place of prairie and mountain, where the open country I knew runs up hard against settlement, and I wanted to catch that edge before memory grows any dimmer. In the stories I gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I looked back on the open-range West I had ridden as a young cowboy and mourned its passing, casting my life's work as a record of a frontier that had vanished within my own lifetime. Denver is that vanishing made visible—rails and buildings shouldering into grassland that not long ago belonged only to the buffalo and the tribes who followed them.
I have painted it from memory and a plainspoken firsthand authority, the same way I worked on the range, rather than from posed studio arrangements. The composition pushes outward from the clustered rooftops toward the pale peaks and the wide sky, warm dust-browns and ochres of the near ground giving way to cool blue distance, so the viewer feels both the pull of the mountains and the encroachment of the town. I want you to see the truth of it—the West I knew closing in on itself, progress and loss in the same frame.
