The statement
# Artist's Statement
I've spent my years painting the West I actually rode—the open range, the tribes who knew it first, the horses and cattle and weather that made it real. This new piece draws from a ranch photograph, but I'm not after a pretty copy. I want the lived truth of it: the dust you can taste, the weight of the work, the way light hits a horse's flank when the day's half done.
In my stories I've written that I set out to record a frontier already vanishing, and that's what drives me still—getting it right before it's gone entirely. I paint from memory and firsthand knowing, not from studio poses. Every cinch ring, every muscle under hide, every scrap of gear has to be exact, because this isn't romance—it's the country as it was.
I want you to feel the vitality and vigor of range life: the strain in the ropes, the animals' power, the honest sweat of it. If I've done my job, you'll see men and horses working as they truly did, rendered with the fidelity that frontier deserves.
