Imagined after Charles M. Russell
A group portrait of ranchers sitting on benches outside a rustic log cabin. The seated man on the far left in a light blue shirt is wearing long khaki pants and trousers instead of shorts.

The statement
I have just completed a group portrait of ranchers resting outside a log cabin, and though it may seem a quieter scene than bucking broncs or buffalo hunts, I painted it for the same reason I have always painted: to set down the truth of the West as I lived it before it vanished. In the stories I gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I looked back on the open-range frontier I had ridden as a young cowboy and mourned its passing, casting my life's work as a record of a world that had disappeared within my own lifetime. This group of men—their worn boots, dusty hats, the way they sit easy after a day's work—comes from that same firsthand memory, not from posed studio models.
The composition holds them in a simple horizontal line along the benches, the weathered logs and warm earth tones anchoring the figures against the pale sky. I have tried to get the details right: the weave of a shirt, the drape of khaki trousers, the exact look of men who have worked cattle and know weather. The brushwork stays loose enough to breathe but true enough to honor what was real.
