The statement

I've gone back over this piece to get the face right — to paint it the way I've always painted, from memory of actual men and women I rode with or traded with on the range. That smooth, perfect look had no grit in it, no weather, none of the lived truth that comes from years in the sun and wind. In my stories I wrote that I set out to record "a frontier that had vanished within his own lifetime," and every face in that vanished world carried the marks of how hard it lived. So I've rebuilt this with the loose, direct brushwork I use when the action moves — dust kicked up, anatomies true, but nothing posed or prettied. The warm ochres and hide-browns come forward now against the cooler distance, the way light actually rakes across open country. I've always maintained I paint the West from having lived it, working from plainspoken firsthand authority rather than studio models, and that means every detail — the set of a jaw, the squint against the glare, the way a man sits his horse — has to ring true or the whole thing's a lie.
