The statement
# Artist's Statement
I've painted this piece from a working ranch photograph because that's the only honest way I know — from what I've seen and lived, not from some studio contrivance. As I wrote in the stories I gathered later, my life's work has been to record "the open-range West" I actually rode "before it disappeared," painting "from lived memory" rather than imagination. This photograph gave me the same kind of truth I used to carry in my head from years of wrangling in the Judith Basin: real horses, real gear, real light on genuine country.
The composition pulls your eye across the working action — men and animals in their true relationship, the way a cinch-ring scene strains along the ropes or riders tumble through a dusty street. I've kept the warm earth tones and that plain, energetic brushwork that kicks up the grit while the anatomy stays exactly observed. What I want you to feel is the vitality of it — the physical truth of range life as it actually was, not as some Eastern illustrator might fancy it. This is documentary work, painted with the fidelity a vanishing world deserves.
