The statement

I have set myself the task of painting what I actually saw — not what the storybooks tell — and so with this canvas of settlers I wanted to get the truth of how that looked on the trail. In *Trails Plowed Under* I wrote that I had watched the open-range West I'd ridden as a young cowboy vanish within my own lifetime, and these wagon-people were part of that closing. I painted them from memory, the way I always work, because I night-herded and wrangled long enough to know the true look of dust, harness, and tired animals better than any studio model could teach me.

The composition pulls the eye along the line of wagons and oxen, warm earth-browns and dusty ochres against a pale, wide sky, the same palette I used in *The Cinch Ring* when I wanted to kick up the grit and weight of working animals. I kept the brushwork loose and energetic so you feel the motion and strain, but I observed the anatomy exactly — every hoof-placement, every yoke — because getting it right matters when you are making a record. What I hope the viewer feels is the sheer physical vigor of the thing, the muscle and sweat it took to cross that country, and maybe a sense that something was ending even as these people arrived.
