I've spent my life trying to set down the West as I knew it — the open range, the herds, the tribes — before it all disappeared into barbed wire and memory. This new piece comes from a ranch photograph, but I'm painting what I lived, not what some studio model might pose. As I wrote in my stories, I'm recording "a frontier that had vanished within [my] own lifetime," and every detail matters when you're trying to hold onto something that's already gone.
The composition pulls your eye across the working life of the place — the horses, the riders, the endless grass and sky. I've kept the warm dust-ochres and hide-browns that belong to this country, letting the light rake across the scene the way it does at dawn or evening when the land shows its true character. The brushwork stays loose enough to kick up the grit and motion, but the anatomy — horses, cattle, men — that I paint exactly as I remember it from years of wrangling in the Judith Basin.
This is documentary work, painted with the plainspoken authority of having been there.
