The statement
I have taken up this new piece to show a thing I never saw in my own riding days — a football match played out on ground that still belongs to the old West. The open range I knew is gone, plowed under or fenced, but here the game brings back something of the vitality and vigor I remember from roundup and rodeo, men moving fast and hard across dirt that kicks up the same dust we ate trailing cattle through the Judith Basin.
In *Trails Plowed Under* I wrote that I set out to record the frontier before it disappeared entirely, painting from memory and the plainspoken authority of having lived it rather than posing studio models. This scene does the same work — it catches a living moment on western ground, the players' energy and the land's character both present at once. I have kept the palette to the warm ochres and browns of that country, the figures composed to pull across the field with the same taut motion as the ropes and riders in *The Cinch Ring*, so the whole surface strains with action.
What matters is getting the truth of it right: new games played on old ground, the West still breathing.
