The statement

# Artist's Statement

I have spent my life putting down on canvas the West I knew when it was still open range, before the barbed wire and the plow came through. This new work draws from a photograph inside the lodge—a glimpse of ranch life caught and held—but I paint it as I would have seen it myself, riding that country when the grass ran free. In *Trails Plowed Under*, I set down how I've tried to record "a frontier that had vanished within [my] own lifetime," and every brush stroke here carries that same purpose: to get the truth of it right before it all slips away.

The composition pulls the eye across weathered timbers and working gear with the same plainspoken authority I learned wrangling in the Judith Basin, painting from memory and lived experience rather than from studio models. Warm ochres and the honest browns of leather and wood dominate, the palette of a working ranch rather than a postcard. Loose, energetic strokes keep the vitality of the place—the dust, the tools worn smooth by use, the light slanting through—so the viewer feels not just what it looked like, but what it *was* to live that life.
