Imagined after Charles M. Russell
A tennis court with a golden eyed Australian shepherd with a pink nose chasing tons of tennis balls around

The statement
I have set out to paint what I've seen with my own eyes, and though a tennis court and a store-bought shepherd are a far cry from the Judith Basin, I paint them the same way I painted the cinch ring or the buffalo herd—from memory of the living thing, not from a studio pose. This golden-eyed dog, tearing after those scattered yellow balls with the same hell-for-leather energy I used to watch in a cutting horse working cattle, is all motion and desire, and I mean to get that surge of life onto the canvas. The geometry of the court—its hard white lines and green surface—sets off the animal the way pale hotel clapboards once framed a street full of broncs and riders, holding the chaos in a frame that makes sense. I work with warm golds and earth tones for the dog's coat against the cool court, loose strokes to scatter the balls and kick up that sense of speed, while keeping the animal's anatomy true. What I'm after is the same thing I've always been after: the honest truth of a moment, the vitality of the creature in motion, painted plain and direct. If you've ever watched something alive give itself over completely to the chase, you'll recognize it here.
