The statement

I painted this piece from memory of the ranch life I knew, working from a photograph that reminded me of the years I spent wrangling in the Judith Basin. As I wrote in *Trails Plowed Under*, I set out to record the open-range West I had actually ridden—its cowboys, its wildlife, and above all its Native peoples—before it disappeared. I paint from having lived it, from night-herding and rope work, not from posed studio models. That lived truth is what I'm after.

The composition pulls tight around the working moment—man, horse, and rope in tension—with warm dust-ochres and hide-browns under Montana light. I keep the brushwork loose and energetic to kick up the grit and motion, but the anatomy stays exactly observed because getting it right matters. Every cinch ring, every line of muscle, every detail of gear has to be true to what it was.

This is a record of a frontier that vanished within my own lifetime, and I paint it with the plainspoken firsthand authority of someone who was there. I want the viewer to see what I saw: not a legend, but the real thing.
