The statement

# Artist's Statement

I've painted this ranch scene because it carries the truth of what I lived through out on the range — the same country I wrangled in as a young man, the Judith Basin years that taught me how a horse moves under strain and what weather does to light on open ground. As I wrote in my stories and letters, I set out to record the open-range West before it disappeared entirely, painting from memory and firsthand authority rather than from posed studio models. This work holds to that plainspoken register.

The composition pulls outward along the working lines — rope, fence, the animals' bodies braced against effort — so you feel the physical tension of the labor. I've kept to warm dust-ochres and hide-browns under a pale sky, loose brushwork kicking up the grit while the anatomy stays exactly observed, the way it has to if you've actually cinched a horse or thrown a calf. The vitality and vigor of men and animals working together is what I'm after, that surging energy that made the frontier real, not some dime-novel fantasy. This is the West I knew, painted true.
