# Artist's Statement
I painted this from a ranch photograph because the truth of the working West — the everyday truth of horses, gear, and open ground — is what I've spent my life trying to set down before it vanishes entirely. As I wrote in the stories gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I'm recording "a frontier that had vanished within [my] own lifetime," and every honest detail matters when you're working against forgetting.
The composition pulls your eye across the ranch buildings and corrals out toward the open country beyond, the way a rider's gaze travels from chore to horizon. I kept the palette to the warm dust-ochres and weathered wood-browns of the actual place, with that pale sky pressing down — no romance, just the real look of it. The brushwork stays loose enough to catch the light and air but tight where the anatomy and construction demand it, because I paint the West from having lived it, "from memory and a plainspoken firsthand authority rather than from posed studio models."
I want you to see what was actually there: the work, the weather, the bones of a life lived outdoors under that big sky.
