A landscape of Denver, after Charles M. Russell

The statement

I have never painted Denver, and I doubt I ever will. When I set my brush to canvas, it is to hold fast the open-range West I rode as a young man — the country before the plow broke it, before the wire cut it into pastures and the towns swallowed the grass. In the tall tales I have gathered and the letters I have written, I have tried to record a frontier that vanished within my own lifetime, painting from memory and a plainspoken firsthand authority rather than from posed studio models. Denver, with its streets and its buildings crowding out the prairie, represents precisely what I mourn: the closing of the country that once belonged to God and to the tribes who were its first and rightful inhabitants. My work holds to the hills, the herds, the mounted riders against an open sky — the vitality and vigor of a world that was true before it was tamed. I paint what I lived, and Denver is no part of that living memory.
