The statement

# Artist's Statement

I've spent my life trying to set down the open-range West before it vanishes entirely—the country I wrangled in as a young man, the Judith Basin nights under stars, the herds and tribes that made that land what it was. This new work comes from a ranch photograph, but I've painted it from memory the way I always do, from having lived among cowboys and horses rather than posing them in a studio. What I'm after is the truth of the thing: the exact way a cinch ring bites, the anatomy of a working horse under strain, the dust that kicks up warm against a pale sky.

I wanted the composition to pull outward along the action, the way *The Cinch Ring* strains along those taut ropes, so the whole surface holds that physical tension. The palette stays with the honest earth-ochres and hide-browns of the range, because I'm recording a world that closed in my own lifetime, and I owe it to get the look and feel right—not prettified, but true to what was actually there before it all disappeared.
