The statement

# Artist's Statement

I've set out to paint this ranch scene because it holds the truth of a life I know from having lived it — years of wrangling and night-herding in the Judith Basin taught me how a man sits his horse when the work is real and the country doesn't forgive mistakes. As I wrote in my stories, I've spent my life trying to record the open-range West I actually rode before it disappeared, and this photograph carries that same plainspoken authority: working horses, honest gear, the sweep of open land under a Montana sky.

The composition pulls the eye across the horizontal breadth of the range, much as I did in *Lewis and Clark Meeting the Flathead Indians at Ross' Hole*, letting the figures anchor the near ground while distance and sky open out behind them. I've kept the warm dust-ochres and hide-browns that dominate my palette, setting them against the cool blues of far buttes and atmosphere. My brushwork stays loose enough to kick up the grit and vitality of the moment, but every animal and piece of tack is observed true — I paint from memory and firsthand knowledge, not posed studio models, because getting it right matters when you're documenting a world that's already gone.
