The statement

# Artist's Statement

I paint the West as I have lived it — years spent wrangling and night-herding in the Judith Basin — working from memory and the plainspoken truth of firsthand experience rather than from posed studio models. This new work, drawn from the life of a working ranch, holds to that same register: the genuine article, not the romantic lie.

What draws me to this scene is the vitality still crackling through ranch work, even as the open range I rode has closed within my own lifetime. The composition strains outward along the ropes and the braced stance of the working hands, letting dust-ochres and hide-browns dominate under open sky, quick strokes kicking up the grit while every animal stays exactly observed. I want the viewer to feel the muscular energy of horses and men — the vigor that made this country — and to recognize that I am recording something real before it vanishes entirely.

"In the tall tales and reminiscences gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I looked back on the open-range West and mourned its passing, casting my life's work as a record of a frontier that had vanished within my own lifetime." This work continues that record.
