# Artist's Statement
I have spent my years painting what I rode and knew — the open range, the working cowboy, the tribes who held this country first — and now I take up a photograph from ranch life to set down that same truth in paint. In the stories I gathered as *Trails Plowed Under*, I looked back on the frontier I had wrangled as a young man and mourned its passing, casting my work as a record of what had vanished within my own lifetime. This photograph offers another fragment of that disappearing world, and I mean to render it with the fidelity to fact and the vitality of lived experience that have always guided my hand.
I paint from memory and firsthand authority rather than posed studio work — years of night-herding in the Judith Basin taught me how a horse moves under strain, how dust kicks up in certain light, how the land stretches empty and sacred. Here I will hold to warm earth tones and anatomical exactness, letting loose brushwork carry the grit and motion while the composition pulls outward in honest tension. The viewer should feel the muscle and weather of it, the truth of men and animals at work before that life closed for good.
